Biography

Ram spent his early childhood in Northern Sri Lanka, gaining a deep respect for nature and the community it sustains. His parents’ work in Africa led him to that continent at the age of 8, where he spent his formative years. He completed his education in several multi-faith schools and, in 1988, obtained a Diploma in Accounting.

When Ram came to Canada in the same year, his prior education was deemed null and void. So as not to be deterred, he completed high school at the Marc Garneau Collegiate, graduated as an Ontario Scholar, and went on to obtain a degree in Political Science at York University. In 1992, while working towards his degree, he was elected to the Senate of York University. Since then, he has volunteered with such Human Rights organizations as the Tamil Center for Human Rights and Amnesty International, where he served as a Youth Facilitator. He has been recognized by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation for his efforts in raising awareness of Human Rights. He has also served as the President of Council of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA), and has made several successful presentations to the Federal Parliament and the Provincial Legislature on such issues as the Citizenship Act and equity rights. His experience goes on to include extensive work with new immigrants and their children.

Ram is presently employed by the Province of Ontario as an Office Productivity Subject Matter Expert. He has been recognized for his contributions in the work place and the community by various awards, including the OPS Spirit Award and the Certificate of Commendation by Scouts Canada.

An avid outdoorsman, Ram continues to build leadership skills among youth by volunteering with Scouts Canada. He actively sponsors and campaigns for the Hope Initiative Project, a community development project based in Africa that funds the education of female children who are affected by HIV/AIDS, and is also an active parent volunteer with Trelawny Public School where his children study.

For the past 10 years, Ram has called West Mississauga home, where he currently enjoys life with his wife Kiruthiha, a social worker, and their two children; son, Vishwaa and daughter, Maitreyi.
