Tamil Nadu police arrested Wednesday Vaiko, the leader of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam, Pazha Nedumaran of Tamil Nationalist Movement, Viduthalai Rajendran of Periyar Dravidar Kazhakam and 160 activists including 23 females as they marched in protest towards the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai demanding the closure of it. Mr. Pazha Nedumaran, in a statement issued Friday, had condemned the Indian state for lack of response as Sri Lanka Navy continues to kill Tamil Nadu fishermen while the Sri Lankan government which has been waging a genocidal onslaught on Tamils has gone to the extent of propping up a campaign against the UN office in Colombo, sources in Chennai said.
Meanwhile, Kolathoor Mani told TamilNet that, “the arrest is an act of political revenge and the truth is hidden diverting attention away from the problems of Tamil Nadu fishermen. The Central and state governments together should find ways to solve the problems of the fisher folk.”
Mr. Nedumaran and Vaiko had demanded India to recognize the UN expert panel to investigate into the war crimes of Sri Lanka and condemned the killing of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lanka Navy in a demonstration meeting held in Chennai Wednesday organized by Ilangkai Tamil Protection Movement.
The police first took Vaiko, Pazha Nedumaran and Nadarasan to Puzhaloor prison and later transferred them to Kadaloor jail Thursday around 5:30 a.m.
They have been charged under the provisions of Section 153 (A) (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and various other Sections of the IPC and 7 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act.
