COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – The top government health official in Sri Lanka's northern war zone says 40 civilians are killed every day and more than 100 others wounded in the fight between government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels.

Dr. Thurairajah Varatharajah says the makeshift hospital he is running out of a school in the coastal town of Putumattalan is overwhelmed by the casualties.

Most of his doctors and nurses have fled the war zone and the facility is running out of some essential medicines.

Varatharajah says civilians in the area have been suffering heavy casualties for three to four weeks.

Aid groups have estimated more than 200,000 civilians are trapped in a tiny strip of land still controlled by the rebels along the northeastern coast.

The military and the rebels deny attacking civilians, but reports from aid workers, health officials and evacuees implicate both sides.

A great Change in your news about Srilankan Tamils

I could read about the Srilankan Tamil news in your recent issues. Thank you for publishing the news. Please contact the Tamil MPs (Parliamentarians) to get more accurate news about the Srilankan Tamil issues if you do not have an independent news agent. Tamils are treated as terrorists in that tiny island from 1948. You will not get any real story about the genocide from any Singalese reporter from that tiny island, if at all any Singalese reporter give you real story about Tamils he would be killed by Srilankan Government.

boys and men separated

I found today that a mother, father and four kids came into the army controlled area from the LTTE controlled area. While they came in, the father was separated from the rest of the family. The rest of the family was told to go to vavuniya. When the family came to vavuniya, the Sri Lankan armed forces handed them the body of the father. The relatives of this family is in Toronto fearing to speak out due to implications to the rest of the family still stuck in the concentration camp in vavunia. But Sri Lanka still maintains that there are ZERO civilians killed. International Community should be ashamed of themselves for remaining silent.

True perpetrators of Tamil’s Genocide

Adolf Hitler's self claim ideology of Aryan chauvinism was reinvented by Anagarika Dharmapala a well known Sinhala Buddhist chauvinist in Sri Lanka later 20th century. The effects of Nazi social policy in Germany was divided between those considered to be "Aryan" and those considered "non-Aryan", Jewish, or part of other minority groups. By promoting Sinhala chauvinism, Buddhist monks methodically plot the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka who are non-Aryans for last 61 years.

Behind closed doors!

Thank you for publishing this news! The main question whichmissing and unanswered is why NGOs and medias kicked out by SriLankan Government? LTTE never said to leave any of them! I believe world cannot be fooled any more. This is the time the media and the world to take hard actions against Sri Lanka's genocidal goverment before it's all over. (Means before we see a Rwanda again)

The International Community needs to Step In

The International Community has remained ignorant long enough, and its time to step in and help is long overdue. As a student at U of T, and as someone who has grown up living in Canada and watching from afar at whats going on back home, I am disgusted by the indifference the Canadian government has shown towards the Tamils in Sri Lanka. If headlines such as these, and the outcry of Tamils here in Canada and around the world, is not enough to convince the government, should we assume that they are waiting for another Rwanda before taking action? For a country that is known worldwide for its humanitarian and peace efforts, why are the Tamils in Sri Lanka being ignored? It can't be ignored any longer. In the West its called ethnic cleansing - it must be stopped immediately.

SL Government is hiding the fact

If Sri Lankan government is not killing people; Why are they restricting the food and medicine? Why the government is expelling NGOs including ICRC? Why are they not allowing international media to the war zone? Also, why are they targetting media people in and outsiude the war zone? IT IS TIME TO ACCEPT THAT THERE ARE TWO NAIONALTIES IN SRI LANKA. -Peace for all.

GENOCIDE AND RAPE IN SRI LANKA Mass genocide rape, murder and torture of Tamils are slowly starting to emerge from this so-called well-intended Sri Lankan “Refugee Welfare Villages.” The world has seen the same during the Balkan war before – sadly only after the fact. Sri Lanka denies media access to reporting, and has expelled all international aid agencies including Red Cross from the region. When you're not let in, it's a sign that there's something they want to hide. It is useful to revisit the past with the aim of finding insights for the present. I travelled to Sri Lanka several times in my life, and I also know the definition of Genocide. The action against Tamils by the repressive and regressive regime of Sri Lanka fits the bill. Sri Lanka was kicked out of the UN Human Rights Commission because of its violation of human rights, including state sponsored brutal killing and torture of media journalists.

Srilankan Genocide with western support

The Srilankan Genocide regime will not stop the war against its own citizens unless the west stop supporting the government blindly. The western governments must consider rationally the plight of the Tamil people and government genocide agenda. The freedom strugle is labeled with war against terrorism and well delivered to the west for the genocide support.

UN's target....

What is UN waiting for? Are they waiting for a death target of Tamil civilians in order for them to do something? Situation in Sri Lanka is getting worse by the day. Civilians are being kept in "concentration camps", aid workers are not allowed to fully provide the medical attention needed. Food is restricted, and people are still dying there. A Safe Zone is suppose to be safe and provide all the basic necessities needed for displaced civilians. SL Government has a "Death Zone", death, and torture is present. IC and/or UN must act now before it's too late. These are lives we are loosing every single day. Do the lives of Tamil civilians have no value to the IC and the UN?
