Nearly 93,877 civilians belonging to 27,601 families displaced due to war from various parts of Jaffna peninsula 19 years ago still languish in refugee camps while most of them are living with their relatives or friends, a statistical report of Jaffna Secretariat said. 73,672 persons of 21,591 families were displaced before 31 December 2005 and 20,205 persons of 6,010 families were displaced after the A9 land route to Jaffna peninsula was closed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in 2006, according to the report.
Civilians evicted by SLA confiscating their lands to establish High Security Zones and bases for SLA and Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) from various parts of the peninsula are yet to be resettled in their lands while the government says they will soon be resettled.
The areas from civilians were displaced in the peninsula include Valikaamam north, SLA Front Defence Line areas in Vadamaraadchi north and east, Thenmaraadchi FDL areas.
Nalloor, Ariyaalai, Jaffna, Kaarainakar, Oorkaavattu’rai, the islets of Jaffna and the northern and southern parts of the islet Nedunththeevu are also areas civilians were displaced from.
272 persons of 70 families displaced due to Tsunami along the coast too have not been resettled in their lands yet.
1,641 persons belonging to 445 families displaced from Maruthangkea’ni area living in their relatives’ and friends’ houses in Jaffna peninsula have not been resettled.
Relief supplied by World Food Program is only given to those who were displaced after 31.12.2005. Most of these civilians were displaced from Valikaamam north.
Meanwhile, government says that it would resettle soon the civilians who had fled the war in Vanni numbering nearly 35,000 and held in the detention camps in government controlled areas.
