February 18, 2009 07:20 AM - Members of Peel's Tamil community will stage a three-day hunger strike starting this Friday to generate awareness in the community about what they say is an ongoing "genocide" in Sri Lanka.

"We (Tamils) believe in finding ways and means of stopping the war, sustaining peace and seeking resolution of the conflict through dialogue and international facilitation," said Suba Rasalingam, a Cooksville resident who is helping to organize the hunger strike.

The hunger strike comes after weeks of organized protests in Mississauga and across Canada by Tamils, who are calling on the federal government to intervene in the civil war between Sri Lankan government forces and Tamil rebels. Protesters say thousands of innocent Tamils have been slaughtered by government troops.

The hunger strike begins at 4 p.m. in the Civic Square. Mayor Hazel McCallion is expected to attend. The protest runs to Sunday at 6 p.m.
