Two civilians killed in DPU Claymore attack

A 45-year-old man and a 24-year-old youth were killed on the spot Thursday morning when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) set off a Claymore mine targeting a tractor carrying Internally Displaced Persons who were on their way to relocated their personal belongings from the houses in Maanthai West in Mannaar district to Maanthai East in Mullaiththeevu district, Tamileelam Police officials said.

The explosion was reported at 9:20 a.m. between Moon'rumu'rippu and Paalaippaa'ni.

The victims were identified as A. Jeyaseelan, 45, from Vanni Vi'laangku'lam and I. Tharmeswaran, 24, from Kollar Pu'liyangku'lam.

Their tractor has also sustained heavy damage.

Recentlly, Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) counter-attacked a DPU team near the attack site and had seized 4 Claymore mines with a T-56-type-2 assault rifle and 3 kitbags, according to the Tamileelam Police.
